How to divide equal distances in one point perspective
This beginner’s guide will show you how to divide a one point perspective drawing to find equal distances. It is helpful for finding the placement of evenly spaced trees, fences, poles, tracks, tiles and other objects.

You will need paper, ruler, pencil and eraser

Draw the horizon line and vanishing point
Draw a vertical line to establish the placement of the closest object and its height.
*This line is called a transversal line

Draw a line from the top of the vertical transversal line to the vanishing point
Draw another line from the bottom of the vertical transversal line to the vanishing point.
*These 2 lines are called orthogonal lines

Draw another vertical line for the chosen distance. (This distance will be divided in half)

Draw a line from the top of the first vertical line to the bottom of the second vertical line
Draw a line from the bottom of the first vertical to the top of the second vertical line.
*These 2 lines are also called orthogonal lines

Draw a vertical line at the intersection

Draw an orthogonal line from the intersection to the vanishing point.

Draw a line from the top of the second vertical line until the bottom orthogonal line. Make it pass through the point where the third vertical line and the middle orthogonal line meet.

Draw a vertical line connecting the 2 ends of orthogonal lines you just made in step 8 and 9

Draw a line from the bottom of the second vertical line to the top orthogonal line. Make it pass through the point where the third vertical line and the middle orthogonal line meet.

Repeat the same process of connecting the top of the second to last vertical line with the bottom orthogonal.

then the bottom of the second to last vertical line to the top orthogonal line.

And then connecting the ends with a vertical line

Repeat the process for as many evenly spaced objects in the distance

Erase the orthogonal lines

For proportionally spaced horizontal lines, draw a horizontal line from the bottom of each vertical line.
*These horizontal lines are also called transversal lines.

To use these lines for a scene or a room, draw a line from the end of the bottom horizontal line to the vanishing point.
Erase the horizontal lines on the right side of it and also above the top horizontal line. See the next picture for results

If you want a proportional grid for the widths of receding objects, make markings that divide the bottom horizontal line.
In this case the divisions are equal but any measurements can be used.

Draw orthogonal lines connecting the markings to the vanishing point

Erase the orthogonal lines above the top horizontal transversal line.
This grid you just made can be used for objects such as floor tiles, railroad tracks or placement of objects.
